چکیده

This paper presents a novel cross-layer approach (LLE-TCP) designed for performance enhancement of TCP over a large variety of wireless networks. LLE-TCP avoids TCP ACK packet transmission over the wireless channel. As a result, the saved time can be utilized by the nodes for data packet delivery. The proposed scheme enhances the protocol stacks of the wireless sender (or a base station) and the receiver with cross-layer ARQ agents which support ACK suppression. ARQ agent suppresses the outgoing ACKs at the receiver side and generates them locally at the sender or base station. The performance evaluation of the proposed approach is performed via simulations as well as IEEE 802.11 testbed experiments for single-hop and infrastructure network scenarios. LLE-TCP demonstrates the performance improvement in the range of 20–100% depending on the transmitted TCP/IP datagram size. Among the factors contributing to performance enhancement are: medium busy time reduction, reduced sensibility to link errors, reduced round trip time (RTT), and improved congestion control. A good level of throughput fairness as well as a fair coexistence with state-of-the-art TCP modifications ensures proper functionality of the proposed approach, while performance advantages extended even on non-LLE-TCP users favor an incremental deployment of the technique in existing networks. 2007 Elsevier B.V. Simultaneous routing and resource allocation has been considered in wireless networks for its performance improvement. In this paper we propose a cross-layer optimization framework for worst-case queue length minimization in some type of FDMA based wireless networks, in which the the data routing and the power allocation problem are jointly optimized with Fuzzy distributed H∞ control strategy ....

Cross-layer error recovery in wireless access networks: The ARQ proxy approach

Wireless networks are being increasingly employed to provide mobile access to network services. In most existing standards, reliable transmission on the wireless medium is achieved through the introduction of ARQ schemes at MAC layer, a strategy which is also employed by TCP for reliable end-to-end data delivery. The paper proposes an approach to overcome the performance degradation deriving fr...

Cross-layer design in AMC/ARQ-based wireless systems with cooperative relaying

Description: Recently, there have been a great deal of research efforts on cross-layer design in wireless networks (see, e.g., [1, 2, 3] and references therein). Furthermore, the past decades gave birth to a large number of innovative techniques at the physical layer (PHY) to overcome the impact of wireless fading channels and to support the diverse quality-of-service (QoS) requirements for het...

Cross-Layer Error Recovery Optimization in WiFi Networks

This paper presents a novel approach for cross-layer error control optimization in WiFi networks. The focus is on the reduction of the overhead deriving from the duplicate ARQ strategies employed at the link and transport layers. The proposed solution, called ARQ proxy, substitutes the transmission of a transport layer acknowledgement with a short request sent at the link layer. Specifically, T...

Position-Based Relaying with Hybrid-ARQ for Efficient Ad Hoc Networking

This paper presents and analyzes an integrated, cross-layer protocol for wireless ad hoc networking that utilizes position location (e.g., through an onboard GPS receiver) and jointly performs the operations of network-layer relaying and link-layer ARQbased error control. The protocol is a modified version of the hybrid-ARQ-based intra-cluster geographically-informed relaying (HARBINGER) protoc...
